The Lakeside Apartments District is a five-block area on the east side of Downtown Oakland, California next to Lake Merritt, which was designated by the city as a historic neighborhood in the 1980s. It incorporates the area bordered by Harrison Street, Lakeshore Drive, 14th Street, and 17th Street.
This area is graced by several historically significant apartment buildings built in the 1920s. Some are in the art-deco style of the '20s and are protected as official city landmarks. Unlike some other areas of Downtown, the neighborhood has seen a continued history of sustained residency and preservation and moderate apartment vacancies in part because of its proximity to Lake Merritt. In recent years, some neighborhood residents have organized to mount political opposition to the plans of real estate developers desiring to build condominiums and other projects they feel are out of keeping with the character of the neighborhood.
Adams Point is a neighborhood of Oakland, California. It is located on the northern shore of Lake Merritt, directly adjacent to Downtown Oakland and the Grand Lake district. Neighborhood landmarks include Lakeside Park, one of Oakland's larger parks, the art deco Belleview-Staten Building and Children's Fairyland, which is in the park. The name Adams Point comes from the name of one of the early landowners/squatters in Oakland, Edson Adams.
Grand Lake, or the Grand Lake District, is a neighborhood of Oakland, California. The neighborhood is located near the northeast corner of Lake Merritt, where Grand and Lakeshore Avenues cross under Interstate 580. It borders Adams Point to the west, Trestle Glen to the east, and Piedmont to the north. It is a dense urban environment that hosts a diverse population of peoples from many walks of life.
There are two shopping areas in the Grand Lake District: Grand Avenue, between Piedmont and Adams Point, the larger of the two. The Grand Lake Theater dominates the corner of Grand and Lake Park Ave. Lakeshore Avenue, between Lake Park Ave and Mandana Blvd. The two streets are connected at their closest point by Lake Park Avenue and Splashpad Park, home of the neighborhood's large Saturday farmers' market.
The Grand Lake neighborhood has seen a degree of revitalization since the 1990s and under the mayoral term of Mayor Jerry Brown. The property values of the area have increased as a result, contributing to the overall rise in land value of the San Francisco Bay Area.
